Free Synchronization Software

sync.live.com

Site: Sync.Live

Description: Online service by Microsoft for synchronising files/folders between two or more computers. Synchronized folder behave as if they were the same folder, e.g. adding file to a folder on one machine makes it appear on all synchronised machines, deleting file from a folder on one machine deletes the same file from all synchronised machines.

Requires Windows Live ID which is used to access various Microsoft services such as Hotmail, MS Messanger, etc. The Sync service requires Sync client software to be installed on each computer you want to be synchronized with other ones. The software is available from https://sync.live.com/clientdownload.aspx.

After the Sync client installation only few simple steps are required to setup the synchronization, everything is done through the Sync Live website.

  • Folders can be shared among multiple users.
  • The synchronization process can be automatic or manual and this can be defined per folder.
  • The Sync client keeps detailed activity log for every synchronised filed.

  • Another service from Microsoft that can be used for backup purposes - SkyDrive (http://skydrive.live.com). It allows storing up to 25GB in Microsoft online storage. But it can only be operated manually, there is no automatic tool that can upload files to the SkyDrive.
